Role of Digital Literacy in Modern Education

The role of digital literacy in today’s educational system is a critical one. The term "digital literacy" includes not only the skills necessary to operate a computer, but also the knowledge of how to effectively utilize computers and technology. Digital literacy has led to a more different way of obtaining a education than in the past; because of the involvement of computers and technology in every aspect of our lives.

Digital literacy has had a big impact on my educational experience as a student. When I did not understand a certain topic in class, instead of asking for help from my teacher, I simply go to the Internet and do an online search for the topic in question or watch bountiful amounts of instructional videos on YouTube and other sources. An example of this was my midterms and finals. At that time, I had some subjects which were difficult for me to grasp, so used the Internet for information and video instruction to assist me in better understanding the subject matter. Most of the time when I viewed and read materials online, they were more clear and concise than the information in the assigned textbook.

Being digitally literate has also helped with completing assignments and developing projects for my teachers. In many cases, my teachers require us to submit our completed work electronically, create PowerPoint presentations, or conduct research via the Internet. In the beginning, I had a lot of trouble with how to use some of the applications and websites associated with digital literacy. However, I kept practicing and learning until I became proficient at making PowerPoint presentations, typing and editing assignments, and electronically creating documents. This has enabled me to complete my assignments much faster than

if  I had to use paper and pen.Communication between teachers and students is a big benefit of digital literacy. Through the use of email, teachers can communicate directly with students, making it easier for them to keep in touch and provide assistance if needed.
